About 5% of sporting injuries are around the hip, and most are caused by overuse.  This entails pathology to any anatomical structure around the hip joint.  Cartilage, ligaments, capsule, tendons, muscles, bone and referred pathology can all be the reason for hip pain.

Some of the causes of overuse syndromes are:

  • Femoroacetabular impingement
  • Stress fractures
  • Snapping hip
  • Greater trochanter bursitis
  • Ischial tuberosity bursitis
  • Athletic pubalgia
  • Iliotibial band syndrome
  • Labral tears
  • Iliopsoas tendonitis/bursitis
  • Rectus femoris injury
  • Hip abductor overuse
  • Adductor tendinopathies and tears
  • Hamstring tendinopathy
  • Nerve entrapments.

Treatment consists of adequate diagnosis and activity evaluation.  It generally consists of rest, ice, elevation, pain management and activity modification with physiotherapy.
